Welcome back to Shuffle! I turn on my Pandora account and whatever first five songs play, those are the ones I discuss today. Share with me your first five songs on shuffle or tell me about memories attached to the songs I talk about today.

“Pour Some Sugar On Me” takes me back to high school days in 1988! You could not escape this song or the album it came from, Hysteria. It is considered an 80’s rock anthem (there are many of course) and it was the glory days of hair metal. (Soon Guns N’ Roses would change the music landscape and take it up a notch and then beyond that, Nirvana would eradicate hair metal from the music charts for good but hair metal will never die!) I love Def Leppard overall. They were a great band with good energy. They have a lot of drama as most rock bands do and that makes them even more interesting. How many drummers do you know who can drum with one hand? Not many right!

Next song:

“Dress You Up” is one of Madonna’s early fun songs. It was a time when Madonna didn’t take everything she did so seriously but at the same time, she was serious about her career. This is not the biggest Madonna hit nor the worst but it’s confectionary in its subject matter and beat. It was a simpler Madonna and we were just riding the wave of the woman who proclaimed on “American Bandstand” ‘I want to rule the world’.

Next song: (Now this is one of those moments in shuffling that I’m looking forward to because this next song I have never heard of. I like many genres of music with many different artists and I’m making this blog to also discover music I do not know as well. This would be one of those examples.)

“Waymore’s Blues” by Waylon Jennings is a song I have not heard of till this moment. I am familiar with Waylon Jennings due to my country music upbringing as a child in central Ohio. Waylon also sang the theme song to “Dukes of Hazzard” which I grew up on as well. Waylon Jennings is a country legend to say the least. I am not familiar with most of his catalog but I respect him and his contributions to music.

As for the song, here are my observations. The song was on an album entitled Dreaming My Dreams which was released in June 1975. I was only three years old at the time so it definitely wasn’t on my radar! It is one of those country songs that has spelling in it like Tammy Wynette’s “D-I-V-O-R-C-E”. He also proclaims he isn’t an “ordinary man/I don’t have to work”. Don’t we all know folks like that! Overall I liked the song, it’s a short little diddy and has classic country elements that I love. (Today’s country can suck a donkey’s dick in my opinion!) I am a huge fan of classic country which basically is anything from the 60’s to the 80’s then add a dash of 90’s country when it made a comeback.

Next song:

“Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a staple of classic rock hits. It brings about a mood of not knowing what is about to happen when the “bad moon” is rising. An unsettling feeling but with a great beat and guitar section to keep you settled. A memory I have of this song is its usage in the movie The Big Chill which starred Glenn Close and Kevin Kline plus many other great actors. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. The soundtrack was all 60’s classics and it is where I discovered a lot of the big hits of that decade. “Bad Moon Rising” is a great song that will lift you up in mood for sure. I was a bartender at a bar in San Francisco called Trax in Haight Ashbury and this one was always a crowd pleaser!

Last song for this entry:

“Rock Bottom” by UFO is a terrific rock song by a terrific rock band! I was introduced to this band by a buddy of mine, Dave. Dave has very eclectic music tastes and knows so much about rock music it would blow your mind. He introduced me to a lot of music in my twenties when I lived in Boston. I wish I would have known about this band back in high school cause they certainly were an influence on bands such as Bon Jovi, Van Halen and other hair metal acts. This song was part of the album Phenomenon in 1974. If you don’t know this band, check them out if great rock music is something you dig!

Until next time, keep shuffling!
