Welcome back to Shuffle! I turn on my Pandora or YouTube account and whatever first five songs play, those are the ones I discuss today. Share with me your first five songs on shuffle or tell me about memories attached to the songs I talk about today.

First Song:

“Back In Black” by AC/DC. Classic AC/DC and a classic rock staple. The guitar licks in this are just on point and unforgettable. Now as for the words, I’ve mumbled what I think he says lol! So it is time to actually look at the lyrics as I write this. It definitely is a youth rebellion song: “Forget the hearse ’cause I never die
I got nine lives
Cat’s eyes
Abusin’ every one of them and running wild”
But the remainder of the band is still kicking it so they must have more than nine lives! The song was a tribute to their first lead singer, Bon Scott, who died of alcohol poisoning. Thus that is why the cover of the album is all black. The album and song was released December 21, 1980. This is a kick ass song from an ongoing kick ass band!

Next Song:

One of my all time favorite songs by the one and only Bonnie Tyler, “Holding Out For a Hero”! An epic pop song that was used in the movie Footloose in the dueling tractor scene! It was written by Jim Steinman and Dean Pitchford. Steinman is known for Meatloaf’s songs as well as Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”. All of his songs are long and epic with bombastic music accompanying grand lyrics. This song so brings back the memories of watching Footloose in my hometown’s theater many times! Kids were literally dancing in the aisles! With the driving drum section and the synth sounds, this is divine 80’s music!

Next Song:

“What’s Yours Is Mine” by The Raconteurs. This band is led by Jack White who is most famously known as the duo The White Stripes. Both of these bands are awesome and each should be listened to by alternative rock fans of all kinds! I was not aware of this particular song till today. The Raconteurs released an album in 2019 titled Help Us Stranger and this song was included on that album. This song has quite the funk infused in-between the rock n’ roll. There are a lot of stuttered musical phrasing which Jack White is know for throughout his career. I believe the song to be stating that nothing is really owned by anyone. Monetary gains and objects that you think you possess are all fleeting. But I bet if someone stole something of yours or took your money, you wouldn’t say that Mr. White!

Next song:

“The Night Out (A-Trak vs. Martin Rework)” by Martin Solveig (2011) is a jazzy little dance remix that I said would be good for when you are getting ready to go out or maybe you are in a convertible with the top down and it comes on it might be a good tune for that moment as well. I have liked a lot of Martin Solveig’s work cause I am a big fan of good dance music with lyrics. I have never been one that is into dance music with no lyrics such as EDM or hard core techno, etc. Guess that makes me a disco queen of sorts!

The Last Song:

“Linger” by The Cranberries (1993). One of my all time favorite songs from the 90’s for sure! It is sung in a dream like voice by Dolores O’Riordan who has such a distinctive voice in the landscape of lead female band singers. This song helped bring The Cranberries to the music forefront at the time. I would say this would make for some grand karaoke or maybe a great cover song for Marilyn Manson. Yeah, my mind works in mysterious ways. The Cranberries are just a great band with many memorable tunes.
