Shuffle! Jan. 29, 2021

Welcome back to Shuffle! I’m doing something a little different today than previous posts. Instead of turning on my Pandora and commenting on the first five songs that come up on my shuffle mode, I’m going to do five songs that were number one on the Billboard charts on this date. I’m going to today’s song (which I have no idea what it is nor do I know who the singer is cause I’m becoming and old out of touch geezer lol) and then I’m going to go back 5, 10, 15 and 20 years to see what was number one and comment on those as well. I’m pretty sure I will be familiar with all those. Let’s see what comes up shall we!

First song:

“Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo. I just watched and listened to this song and video and I must say I am very, very impressed upon my first listen! She is from the Disney world but she is going to go on to bigger and better things in my opinion (like my current girl, Miley Cyrus!). This song is full of teenage longing and desire but it is also heartfelt and real. There is some swearing which is perfectly placed and acceptable in this song. I went to her wiki and her inspirations are Taylor Swift and Lorde (which makes sense since she is eighteen!). This song has hit #1 in multiple countries so her life is changing rapidly. Another impressive fact is that she co-wrote this song so she already is ahead of the game and knows that’s where the real money and accolades come from in the music business. Like I said, I am very impressed with this young woman and look forward to hearing more from her in the future!

Next song:

Five years ago on this date the number one song was “Sorry” by Justin Bieber. I can’t dis the Biebs lol. He is probably annoying to most people my age but I have to give him props for sticking around and being more than just a flash in the pan teenage boy music star. Sure he has done some dumb ass things publicly (we were all young once right?) but it comes with the territory of being a young and famous pop star. I like this song but the video is pretty lame. Just a bunch of girls dancing in sync which I’m not dissing the girls and their talents but it’s just a boring video. Bieber co-wrote this song with three others. So once again, these younger stars know that’s where the real money comes in. Per Wiki, this song was about Selena Gomez who he had off and on relations with if you are up on that sort of pop culture news. This is a nice bop-your-head kind of song and good for summertime road trips. Like I said, I am not here to dis the Biebs!

Next song:

Ten years ago today the number song was “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. I’m indifferent about this particular song. It’s depressing and the video is him dragging around a piano through LA so that must have been kind of annoying for him in the making of the video! Bruno is very talented and I like a lot of his other songs but this one just doesn’t really do it for me. Next!

Next song:

Let’s go back to this date in 2006 for “Check On It” by BeyoncĂ© featuring Bun B and Slim Thug. This is pretty standard and classic BeyoncĂ© in song and choreography video wise. Lots of booty shakin’ and flipping hair moves. It’s a fun song for sure and of course Bey is one of the reigning queens of pop and R&B for sure. She has made her mark on music and pop culture for infinity. On the Wiki I saw that one of my favorite dance remixers, Junior Vasquez, re-mixed the song. I gave that a good listen and it is pretty sped up and strays away from the original recording for sure. It’s a little too fast for my taste but definitely has the Junior club mix stamp on it.

Last song:

We are now in 2001 on this date with “It Wasn’t Me” by Shaggy featuring Rickardo “RikRok” Ducent. At first when I saw this come up, I didn’t remember the song or how it went but upon playing it on YouTube, it all came back to me. It’s kind of a funny song in that he got caught “creepin” (thank you TLC) with the girl next door. His friend tells him to deny everything even though she saw everything. He is remorseful and is trying to own up to his “creepin” ways. In reading the Wiki on this song, this tidbit came up:

“The lyrics of “It Wasn’t Me” inspired Slate writer Josh Levin to coin the term the “Shaggy defense” to describe R. Kelly‘s defense at his child pornography trial stemming from the production of a sex tape: “I predict that in the decades to come, law schools will teach this as the ‘Shaggy defense’. You allege that I was caught on camera, butt naked, banging on the log cabin floor? It wasn’t me.”

Hopefully that didn’t work for Mr. Kelly. But let’s not go into all that for now!

That is all for this post. I will be writing about more music very soon. Subscribe below so you know when the new posts are ready to go. Until then, keep shuffling!
